Fair Work Taskforce - Gosford (2)

Nurses Michelle and Rhianna discussed levels of training and staff numbers. There needs to be appropriate staff of differing levels of training available around the clock. This is vital, but is under threat or non existent.

They say that penalty rates are important because of the anti family and anti social nature of unusual working hours. To strip penalties is just unfair.

Rhianna is an AIN, casualisation of the workforce is a problem. Casual employees are constantly  waiting for a call to come in to do a shift. Without job security your worklife is unpredictable and difficult. People will work a back to back double shift if offered just because they feel there might not be another shift offered in the fortnight. Age care is growing but there are not enough of staff to get around where needed.  Without strict nurse to patients ratios service levels and lives are at risk.

Michelle & Rhianna recommended that proper safe ratios should apply in all cases and that Registered Nurses should be on hand in all nursing homes 24-7

The 7 Eleven issue highlights the need for UNIONS

Unions grew out of abuse from employers. Union membership protects workers. As employers try on tactics such as have been uncovered at 7 Eleven and as they are uncovered for doing so, Union membership will grow.

Debt explodes under the Abbott government

Debt explodes under the Abbott government

From the web page of STEPHEN KOUKOULAS:-
"As at last Friday, 28 August 2015, gross government debt was $384.7 billion - the highest level ever recorded. This represents an increase of $111 billion from the level inherited by the Abbott government in September 2013. It is just as well Treasurer Joe Hockey scrapped the debt ceiling legislation early in the Abbott government's term because he would now be having to introduce legislation to have the ceiling raised beyond $400 billion, a figure that will be exceeded before year end."

Build a Better Future

No-one becomes a millionaire through penalty rates. Kids get their school shoes, wives might get a bunch of flowers and husbands could buy a few golf balls. Most folks use the penalty rates in their wages to pay bills.

Through the cover of the productivity commission the Abbott govt are looking to remove penalty rates.

Tonight I went out with some friends to spread the word about this nasty plan.

Around the country people like me are doing the same thing. The conservatives have labeled it a "secret army" not much of a secret, we were outside Coles in Unina and we spoke to around 200 locals that are tired of the attacks on honest working folks. We ran out of petition sheets and we collected numerous volunteers to help our campaign!.

No Ice Epidemic in Australia? - Associate Professor John Fitzgerald

An Aussie drug expert, Associate Prof John Fitzgerald says claims of an Ice Epidemic are founded on poor interpretation of information.

Despite a barrage of media coverage, ice use is not increasing in Australia. In fact, it may be decreasing, according to Associate Professor John Fitzgerald, a sociologist and drug expert at the University of Melbourne.

Deceitfulness personified : - PM Tony Abbott

Doesn't Tony Abbott think we are paying attention? To rip funding away from the programs that help at the pointy end of this issue and then concentrate on the enforcement end is less than satisfactory. The point has already been made that a contact point, several of them in fact, already exists for those that have information regarding drug dealers.

We deserve better.

Please Joe, stop the lies!

I offer you this piece. It tells a tale about a Federal Treasurer that tells porkies. We deserve better.

When you vote in the next Federal Election,  remember this.

This past week was huge!

Same Sex Marriage, the Dyson Heydon fiasco, everyone calling out the Govt on the measly Carbon Emission reduction targets.... what a week. I know there is more and so do you! Of course there is the leadership speculation and the conga line of back- benchers that are ready to cross the floor!

I can't wait for next week, and it starts tomorrow...

Coalition decide against a free vote on Same Sex Marriage

Here is how some commentators describe the circumstances around today's developments:- In a deft political move within the LNP Coalition Tony Abbott has brought the Nats into the room to boost the anti equality leaning vote. The result is the position of the Govt is unchanged.

Christopher Pyne is refusing to give a direct answer when asked if he considered that the PM had "stacked" the vote.

Dust Diseases Board to bite the Dust. Mike Baird and his Government in action!

In a move that is claimed to be friendly to victims, this LNP NSW Govt will end the Dust Diseases Board of NSW.

Sufferers of asbestosis must be fuming.

This affliction is one of the most, if not the most significant workplace injury that we have seen. Perhap the bulk of sufferers have not yet even been identified... a ticking time bomb, if you will!

Of course asbestosis is not the only affliction that the Dust Diseases Board oversees.

Thanks for less than nothing Mike.

Change is on the way for the coal industry...

Bank of America has a new attitude towards coal mining. Is the Abbott Government watching the rest of the world walk away from Coal? It seems not.
"Commitment to reduce financing for coal mining companies worldwide – The new policy commits the bank to “continue to reduce our credit exposure to coal extraction companies” and specifies that this commitment is global in scope. Rainforest Action Network (RAN) will be monitoring Bank of America’s involvement with transactions with coal mining companies to verify that it is following through on this commitment."
While Abbott an co. walk away from renwables and re-embrace coal... the rest of the World open their eyes to the dangers of coal.

Free trade agreement: Voters oppose China-Australia deal after hearing controversial elements: poll - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Voters in marginal seats across four states strongly oppose key aspects of Australia's free trade agreement (FTA) with China, according to an opinion poll.
The two countries signed the agreement last week, with the Prime Minister Tony Abbott hailing it as "history making".
The deal could see prices on electronics fall for Australian consumers, and eliminate tariffs on various commodity and agriculture exports to China.
But more than 90 per cent of people surveyed by UMR Research said they would oppose the agreement altogether if the following two parts were included:
First, Chinese investors in infrastructure projects valued at $150 million or more being able to bring in Chinese workers without advertising jobs locally.
Second, Chinese firms gaining some rights to sue Australian governments for policy changes that adversely affect their interests.

If  you, like these many voters have issues that mean the ChFTA might not be in the best interest of Australia, then please keep an eye on this blog for information about the numerous ways to express your concerns.....

Bronwyn Bishop slugs taxpayers $1000 a day for private limo costs

It is time to get out the fine-tooth comb.. maybe even the one that she builds the beehive with...  There is more than enough doubt and real indications that rorting may have occurred. A full and proper investigation is required...

"Embattled federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has revealed a federal department is examining two more charter flights she has admitted could have been used to attend party political events.
The development comes as Fairfax Media can reveal that Mrs Bishop charged taxpayers almost $1000 a day to travel in luxurious private limousines during her $90,000 fortnight in Europe."

Refused to stand down: Bronwyn Bishop answers questions about the helicopter flight.

Our Treasurer speaks out against Ugly Wind Turbines - Killing Lake George

Joe Hockey - Australian Treasurer, has bemoaned the aesthetics of Wind Farms once again..... Oh not because he prefers coal... oh NO!!! it's just the look of them.

They are killing Lake George he says! Listen to him here...

 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-15/treasurer-joe-hockey-bemoans-wind-farm-aesthetics/6621016

Have a look at these coal mine pics.... his comparison remember, is the "look" of these things

Now have a look at some typical Wind Farms...

To say his statement is STUPID would be disrespectful, so I am not going to say that. But if there was a way to say that his statement is STUPID without being disrespectful then that's what I'd do!

National Welfare Rallies make Nation Newspaper.... Seems only right doesn't it?

With the kick off of the National Welfare Rallies being our rally right here in Gosford, expectations are good for the rest if the rallies across the country. It is my intention that these rallies continue (and grow in number) until we have a government that understands that all people deserve a decent existance.

The current government thinks that imposing a fine of $55 on unemployed that miss an appointment. Is it a crime to miss an appointment? Isn't there already a set of expectations and requirements around benefits continuing? Does Scot Morrison think that punishment is the best encouragement that he could provide to welfare recipients? This situation is a clear example that shows the mindset of this government.

They will never, never achieve an socially equitable outcome with such authoritarianism.

March Australia - Central Coast Welfare Rally

Today some caring community members came together to shine a light on the attack that welfare and social equity are suffering in Australia right now.

An event that was put together in such short a period might have been expected to fail.... but not this time!

We welcomed plenty of newcomers and most people lingered afterwards for some inspiring important discussions.

Thanks to Michelle Cashman, Father Rod Bower, Aunty Robyn, Vicki Scott and Jack Lloyd for speaking up!

As evidence of abuse mounts, prosecution of Abbott Govt in ICC looking more likely | UndercoverInfo

A year or even six months ago most pundits would have agreed it was highly unlikely that an Australian prime minister would face prosecution in the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding Government policy and treatment of asylum-seekers. But that was before the weeks and weeks of abuse testimony, of leaks by detention centres workers, and before the 'people smugglers' funding affair. Revelations of abuse (physical, sexual, psychological) of detainees, including children, at the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres, has meant prosecution of the Abbott Administration in the ICC is now far more probable. Indeed, a case against the Abbott Government has been filed with the ICC. Below, we explain what this case with the ICC will involve and, on the way, examine the numerous Australian laws and international protocols that the Abbott Government is accused of violating.

I'm Sensing a Patern of Behavior

When the LNP took over the reigns in Canberra, they told a tale of debt and deficit, they continued the tale until the time when they chose to increase (drastically) both the debt & the deficit!

Similarly, the was an out-cry about the "mess" that had been made of the NBN roll-out.... Read the AFR piece linked here below... Then please tell me who has made a mess of the NBN?

How did Tony Abbott end up as the PM? The warning signs were as clear as can be.

The signs were obvious, we had good warning and yet... there was enough support in the community, to bring Tony Abbott to the Lodge... This from as long ago as 2002

AM Archive - Tuesday, 2 July , 2002  00:00:00
Reporter: Ross Solly
LINDA MOTTRAM: Federal Employment and Workplace Relations Minister, Tony Abbott, continues to attract strong criticism after he told an industrial relations conference yesterday that bad bosses, like bad fathers and husbands, should be tolerated because they generally do more good than harm.

Unions say his comments are bizarre and women's groups say they're dangerous.

From Canberra, Ross Solly reports.

ROSS SOLLY: Having already compared himself with Moses, Tony Abbott yesterday handed out this piece of advice for employees.

TONY ABBOTT: If we're honest, most of us would accept that a bad boss is a little bit like a bad father or a bad husband. Not withstanding all his or her faults, you find that he tends to do more good than harm. He might be a bad boss but at least he's employing someone while he is in fact a boss.

ROSS SOLLY: And the gathering at the Industrial Relations Conference was left to draw their own conclusions. Plenty who didn't attend were quick to respond. Labor's Carmen Lawrence.

CARMEN LAWRENCE: I was very upset by the comparison he made with bad fatherhood or being a bad husband. Basically that you put with their faults because on balance you think they're going to do more good than harm.

Well that's not very good advice to someone if they're in a bad relationship, for instance where there's violence involved or abuse involved and Abbott never knows where to draw the line.

ROSS SOLLY: The unions were also not impressed with the comparison. The ACTU's Greg Combet says Minister Abbott has given employers the green light to treat employees as they choose.

GREG COMBET: Tony Abbott is supposed to even handedly look after the interests of employers and employees but now he's saying no matter what an employer does, they're to be forgiven and it's okay.

It's outrageous and he should apologise.

ROSS SOLLY: AM contacted Tony Abbott this morning. He wouldn't be interviewed, saying his comments have been misinterpreted and that he was only referring to the problems associated with tying business up in red tape. He did say sometimes one uses metaphors which are less apt.

Eva Cox, from the Australian Women's Electoral Lobby, certainly believes the comparison was less apt.

EVA COX: I am absolutely appalled. This is not the sort of leadership one would expect from somebody like Tony Abbott, who claims to be a Christian gentleman… in various guises.

You just don't go around saying you can be a bad boss, a bad father and a bad husband, because this seems to sanction it. You know, as long you actually provide some sort of wages and presumably occasionally chuck some money at the little woman. I mean this is not the sort of leadership I expect out of government.

ROSS SOLLY: Eva Cox has joined with Carmen Lawrence and Greg Combet in demanding an apology and a retraction from Minister Abbott.

EVA COX: I think a lot of us have been working, whether it's an area of domestic violence or I've been personally doing some stuff around the workplace, to try and say that you expect people to behave responsibly and civilly in the workplace, particularly those with authority.

You expect bosses not to bully and not to encourage bullying and you expect a reasonably amount of good behaviour. We've been pushing for a long time about the fact that the household has to involve people being civil to each other.

Now here we have one of the major government ministers carrying on like a two-bob watch about the fact that it doesn't really matter as long as you're a husband and as long as you're a boss, you can do pretty well anything you like. I just think that that's appalling.

LINDA MOTTRAM: Eva Cox from the Australian Women's Electoral Lobby, speaking to Ross Solly in Canberra.

Second fire in vacant Sydney County Council Building

This week I attended the second fire in just a few weeks in the old Sydney County Council building. Homeless folks are inhabiting the building and it must be very cold.

It is so important to have well funded safety nets for those that find themselves without a roof over their head. Lives are really in the balance.

If you are in the area or know a similarly utilised empty building keep an eye out for signs of fire this winter. Built in fire protection systems are rarely operational in such circumstances.
